The Potsdam Declaration

The end of the war began to take shape in July 1945, when the Potsdam Declaration was issued by the Allied powers (the United States, the United Kingdom, and China). The declaration outlined the terms of Japan's surrender, which included the demand for unconditional surrender and the threat of complete destruction if they refused.

Japan's Initial Response

Japan initially rejected the Potsdam Declaration, with Prime Minister Kantaro Suzuki famously declaring, "The government has decided to ignore it." However, the tide of the war had turned decisively against Japan. The United States had already gained control of Okinawa after a bloody battle, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, respectively, had devastated the Japanese cities and caused hundreds of thousands of casualties.

The Soviet Invasion of Manchuria

Adding to Japan's desperate situation, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8th and invaded Manchuria, Japan's last major stronghold on the Asian mainland. The Soviet invasion, combined with the atomic bombings, shattered Japan's defenses and convinced Emperor Hirohito that continued resistance was futile.

Emperor Hirohito's Surrender Speech

On August 14th, Emperor Hirohito delivered a radio address to the Japanese people, announcing Japan's surrender to the Allied powers. In his speech, the Emperor expressed his deep regret for the war and called on his people to accept the terms of the Potsdam Declaration.
