The Plot
The novel begins with the assassination of President Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. The investigation into the assassination quickly uncovers a plot by a group of Confederate sympathizers to overthrow the United States government. The plotters planned to assassinate President Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of State William H. Seward.
The investigation is led by Colonel Henry Rathbone, a close friend of President Lincoln. Rathbone and his team of detectives quickly identify John Wilkes Booth as the assassin. They also uncover the involvement of Lewis Powell and David Herold in the plot.
The investigation culminates in a dramatic chase and capture of the conspirators. Booth is killed in a shootout with Union soldiers. Powell is captured and hanged. Herold is captured and hanged.
