Nancy Ward was born in 1738 in Chota, Tennessee, to a Cherokee father and a white mother. Her father was a respected chief, and her mother was a devout Christian. Nancy was raised in both cultures, and she learned to speak both Cherokee and English.

When Nancy was 16 years old, the American Revolution began. The Cherokee were divided on whether to support the British or the Americans. Nancy's father was a strong supporter of the British, but Nancy herself was more sympathetic to the American cause.

In 1776, Nancy married a white man named Bryant Ward. Bryant was a supporter of the American Revolution, and he encouraged Nancy to use her influence to help the American cause.

Nancy did just that. She used her knowledge of both Cherokee and English to serve as a translator and negotiator between the Cherokee and the Americans. She also helped to raise money and supplies for the American army.

Nancy's work was invaluable to the American cause. She helped to keep the Cherokee neutral during the war, and she also helped to secure the release of American prisoners. In 1781, Nancy was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for her service.

After the war, Nancy continued to work for peace and reconciliation between the Cherokee and the Americans. She helped to negotiate the Treaty of Holston in 1791, which established a boundary between the two nations.

Nancy Ward died in 1822. She was a remarkable woman who made a significant contribution to the American Revolution. She is an unsung hero who deserves to be remembered for her courage, her intelligence, and her dedication to peace.
