The current education system is failing our children. Test scores are declining, graduation rates are dropping, and students are not prepared for college or the workforce.

There are a number of factors that are contributing to the decline of our education system, including:

  • Too much emphasis on standardized testing. Standardized tests are a poor measure of student learning and they are driving instruction in the wrong direction. Teachers are forced to teach to the test instead of teaching the skills that students need to succeed in college and the workforce.
  • A lack of school choice. Parents should have the right to choose the school that is best for their child. However, in many communities, parents are forced to send their children to failing schools.
  • A shortage of qualified teachers. The teaching profession is not attracting and retaining the best and brightest. This is due to low pay, poor working conditions, and a lack of respect for teachers.
  • A lack of parental involvement. Parents play a vital role in their children's education. However, many parents are not involved in their children's schools because they do not feel welcome or because they do not have the time.

There are a number of things that we can do to fix the education system, including:

  • Reduce the emphasis on standardized testing. Standardized tests should be used to assess student learning, but they should not be the driving force behind instruction. Teachers should be given the freedom to teach the skills that students need to succeed in college and the workforce.
  • Increase school choice. Parents should have the right to choose the school that is best for their child. This could include public schools, private schools, charter schools, or homeschooling.
  • Recruit and retain qualified teachers. The teaching profession needs to be made more attractive to the best and brightest. This can be done by increasing teacher pay, improving working conditions, and providing more respect for teachers.
  • Increase parental involvement. Parents need to be more involved in their children's education. This can be done by volunteering in the classroom, attending school events, and talking to their children about their schoolwork.
