As a medical-surgical nurse, I witness the full spectrum of human life and experience. I am privileged to be present for the most vulnerable and momentous moments of my patients' lives. These poems are a glimpse into the profound humanity of caring for patients, and the challenges, rewards, and emotional toll it takes on nurses.
The First Day
I see you lying there, so still and small, Your eyes closed, your breathing shallow and slow. I know you're scared, and I'm here to tell you, It's going to be okay.
I'll take care of you, I promise, I'll be here with you every step of the way. I'll help you through this, And I'll be here when you wake up.
The Night Shift
The night is long, and the work is hard, But I'm here to care for you, my patient dear. I'll check your vitals, give you your meds, And make sure you're comfortable in your bed.
I'll listen to your worries, And I'll hold your hand when you're scared. I'll be here with you through the night, And I'll help you make it through.
The Good Days
I love the good days, When my patients are smiling and laughing, When they're making progress, and getting stronger. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
I'm so proud of you, my patients, For your strength, your courage, and your determination. You're an inspiration to me, And I'm honored to be your nurse.
The Bad Days
I hate the bad days, When my patients are in pain, or scared, or dying. When there's nothing I can do to help, And all I can do is watch them suffer.
It's hard to see my patients in pain, And it's even harder to say goodbye. But I'm here for them, until the end, And I'll do everything I can to make them comfortable.
The End of the Day
At the end of the day, I'm exhausted, but I'm also grateful. I'm grateful for the opportunity to care for my patients, And for the privilege of being a part of their lives.
I'm a medical-surgical nurse, And I'm proud of the work I do. I'm here to care for my patients, And I'll be here for them, until the end.
