Stoker attended Trinity College Dublin, where he studied mathematics and physics. He graduated in 1870 with a degree in science. After graduation, Stoker worked as a civil servant for several years. In 1878, he married Florence Balcombe, and the couple had one child, a son named Irving Noel Thornley Stoker.

In 1882, Stoker left his job as a civil servant to become the personal secretary to Sir Henry Irving, the famous actor and manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London. Stoker worked for Irving for 27 years, and during this time he wrote several novels and short stories.
